Having reluctantly left a promising career in New York to follow her husband to the suburbs, Alice longs for her former life. Determined to become a writer, she often finds herself alone in her somewhat unsettling old house where, as best she can, she refuses to embrace her husband's dream of an idyllic family life.

Thanks to an old cookbook and magazines from the 1950s found in the basement, she discovers the life of Nellie, the housewife and former owner of the house. As she delves into the recipes, the young woman realizes that Nellie has left behind information about the sinister underbelly of her seemingly perfect marriage, in addition to entrusting the neighbor with letters that were never mailed. The secrets they contain are anything but harmless. As tensions rise in her own marriage, Alice understands that, to protect herself, she too will have to cultivate her own little secrets…
